Hamburg started with the newly signed Kevin Keegan. He only just signed the day before the game on 26.07.1977 from Liverpool and cost Hamburg £500.000. A world record at the time! Keegan helped Hamburg beat Barcelona 6-0 in this pre-season friendly. Johan Cruyff went off injured in first half and was ruled out for 7 weeks afterwards.

At Ajax Amsterdam Johan Neeskens completed a hattrick of European Cup wins between 1971 and 1973 alongside the more famous Johan Cruyff. Neeskens moved to FC Barcelona in 1974 to join Cruyff who moved to Barcelona in 1973. At Barcelona he was nicknamed Johan Segon ‘Johan the Second’ as Cruyff had arrived first.

For Holland Johan Neeskens scored the first goal from a penalty in the 1974 World Cup final vs Germany. Germany however went on to win the 1974 World Cup. He was also one of the star performing players in the 1978 World Cup where Holland against lost in the final… this time without the retired Johan Cruyff.
